Properties and Virtues of Clear Quartz (Rock Crystal)

Also known as colorless quartz, translucent quartz or hyaline quartz, clear quartz (or rock crystal) is the most revered stone in crystal healing. Its healing, harmonizing and amplifying powers have been put to use since antiquity, and its physical properties, piezoelectricity in particular, make it a go-to component in our most modern technologies (computers first among them).

Mineralogical properties

Clear quartz is a mineral species of the silicate group, tectosilicate subgroup, made up of silicon dioxide. Its crystal system is trigonal or rhombohedral.

It is the most common mineral on Earth and accounts for 12% of the total mass of the lithosphere. You can find it just about everywhere on the planet, though the main commercial deposits are in Brazil.

Inclusions in clear quartz

An inclusion is any material trapped inside a crystal. It may be a liquid, a gas bubble or another mineral caught up as the crystal was forming. Clear quartz can therefore contain inclusions of tourmaline, iron oxide (hematoid quartz), chlorite, rutile, hematite…

Crystalline and cryptocrystalline varieties of quartz

Quartz comes in many crystalline varieties owing to other elements present during its formation, which mostly alter its tint or color. The best known are smoky quartz, rose quartz, amethyst, citrine and ametrine (a blend of citrine and amethyst).

The cryptocrystalline varieties of quartz, made up mostly of silica and microcrystalline quartz, include the chalcedonies (agates, chrysoprase, flint, onyx, sardonyx, carnelian, jasper) and heliotrope (or bloodstone).

Etymology and meaning of the words “quartz” and “crystal”

In the Middle Ages, the term quartz applied to every kind of crystal. It was Georgius Agricola, the “father of mineralogy”, who narrowed its use to rock crystal. Its etymology is hard to trace.  One hypothesis has it coming from a contraction of the German word gewärz, meaning “outgrowth”. Another traces it to quaterz, a word that referred to poor-quality ore until the 16th century. Others still believe it derives from querklufterz, “cross-vein ore”.

Since the etymology of “quartz” can’t be pinned down for sure, this is a good moment to look at the word “crystal” instead. It comes from the ancient Greek krystallos (“ice”), itself derived from kryos (“frost”). As an aside, the Roman author Pliny the Elder claimed in the first century AD that rock crystal was ice frozen so hard that even the fiercest heat could not melt it.

Historical uses of clear quartz

Rock crystal tools have turned up at a number of prehistoric sites. In the Paleolithic it was used much like flint to start fires: striking it with a metal blade threw off a spark that would set tinder alight.

Plenty of ancient texts describe rock crystal being used for its healing and esoteric virtues. In The Crystal Bible, Judy Hall reports that in the 8th century BC, the Greek priest Onomacritus claimed that anyone who entered a temple holding a piece of rock crystal would have their prayers answered, since the gods themselves could not resist its power.

Even back then, people were making quartz elixirs for their curative properties. Pliny the Elder also tells how physicians cauterized wounds with a crystal ball: held against the skin and turned toward the sun, it concentrated the sun’s rays and produced the heat needed to get the job done.

In the 1st century AD, a Christian mystic by the name of Apollonius of Tyre is said to have owned a quartz crystal ball that could make him invisible at will, a power he supposedly demonstrated before the emperor Julius Caesar himself. The Maya meanwhile used rock crystal as a dowsing rod to locate sources of water.

Rock crystal still plays a major role in the beliefs and magical practices of many tribal peoples around the world (Aboriginal Australians, the Negritos of the Malay Peninsula), who see it as coming from the heavens and use it in initiation rites. Native American peoples, for their part, had the custom of placing a rock crystal in a newborn’s cradle to connect the child to the earth.

Today, quartz crystal is synthesized and used across the tech industry for its piezoelectric properties. You’ll find it in our watches, radios and computers… The electromagnetism of quartz comes mainly from the base of its crystalline structure, which is made of silica. Silica shares its molecular and chemical makeup with silicon (which is where the name Silicon Valley, the world’s tech capital, comes from).

Quartz properties in crystal healing

In crystal healing, clear quartz can be used in any situation. First of all because it is the healing stone par excellence: every quartz crystal tunes itself to the body in order to realign its vibrations and restore balance.

This ability to fall into step with the body is what makes quartz crystals so effective. Since most ailments, mental and neurological illnesses in particular, are tied to a kind of “chemical” instability, quartz crystals help bring back equilibrium.

Clear quartz also gets so much use in crystal healing because it amplifies the vibrations of other stones and crystals. One way to go about it is to place four quartz points around each crystal to intensify its beneficial effects. Stones and quartz crystals can then be laid on the chakras targeted by the treatment while the person receiving it lies down.

For intestinal and digestive problems, you can make a quartz elixir by placing your clear quartz in a bowl of water together with red jasper and a piece of magnesite. Leave the stones to soak overnight and drink the elixir every morning for 1 to 2 months. You can also use it this way if your goal is to lose weight.

Quartz brings vitality and comfort. It unblocks and channels energies, and clears away negativity. It is the symbol of purity, and of spiritual purity more specifically.
