The name labradorite comes from the region where it was discovered in 1770: Labrador, in Canada. Romé de L’Isle described it as the “Labrador stone” in 1783, which is the very meaning of “labradorite”, the suffix “-ite” coming from the Ancient Greek –itês, “mineral”, and Labrador indicating where this mineral comes from.
