Definition: anguish is a phenomenon found in every human culture. It has been examined both through the lens of philosophy, by authors such as Jean-Paul Sartre, Pascal and Heidegger, and through that of psychology, most notably by Sigmund Freud. From the standpoint of psychopathology, anguish is a state of deep unease felt as a sensation of pressure and tightness in the body, accompanied by dread and fears (such as the fear of death) against which the person feels powerless.
